What Is EMDR and How It Helps


In a previous article, you have glanced into the various facets of PTSD or Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. In this particular blog, we will look into one of the solutions for this: EMDR. 

It may look from the very first glance that EMDR looks like a very complicated treatment or procedure. It may also seem like an operation to the uninitiated! However, this is not entirely true. While it is certainly a treatment, it is not a medical operation at all. Now, without any further ado, let us see what EMDR really is. EMDR stands for Eye movement and Reprocessing. This is actually a kind of psychotherapy that helps or enables one to heal from the ravages of emotional stress, distress and other distress. 

As you know, these are caused from various negative emotional issues, which may come in anyone’s life. For instance, it can be caused to emotional and physical childhood abuse, bullying, heartbreak, job loss and a number of other factors. However, the bottom line is that it is always strong enough to sap the emotional strength of a person for years if not treated in time. This is why timely treatment is so important. 

It is widely believed that it takes a considerable time for emotional distress to heal completely. According to EMDR, the mind can heal as much as the human body. Let us say that you cut your hand while playing. When this happens, your body does its best to close the wound as soon as possible in order to avoid infections. The human body is therefore amazing in this way that it is able to heal itself over time. The human mind is something like this as well.  EMDR specialists believe that certain emotional blocks from mental trauma prevents the mind from healing completely. If the problem is allowed to remain indefinitely, the mental trauma festers and causes one a lot of unrequired suffering. According to EMDR, when the mental blocks and trauma is lifted, the mind starts to heal in earnest.
